Using methods of public intervention and video installation, Storming Times Square is a project that symbolically releases our fantasies of overcoming imposed obstacles in our lives. Engaging individuals as spectators and participants, the video content was the result of a public-participation performance. Using green-screen technology, I recorded over one thousand visitors of Times Square crawling over a stage while being captured by an over-head video camera. The result was a video animation with both realistic and abstract forms that featured participants climbing 47 LED billboards in Times Square.
Storming Times Square is born from a desire to have viewers project themselves, literally and metaphorically, onto their immediate environments. By “conquering” these buildings, they become active participants of a shared history, rather than mere spectators of an urban reality.
