Mona Hatoum has long been regarded in Great Britain and the U.S. as one of the most important artists of her generation. The daughter of Palestinian parents, she was born in Lebanon in 1952 and has lived in London since 1975. Life outside her homeland has heightened Mona Hatoum's sensitivity to the themes of power and identity, which are leitmotivs in her oeuvre. Many of her objects, video pieces, and installations deal with aspects of institutionalized violence and the vulnerability of the individual. (...)
