In 2011, a reviewer in Le Figaro called him "a passionate fan of chiaroscuro" who loves to plunge viewers into an "abyss" of total darkness to maximise their perception of the surprising narrative fantasies he constructs with light.

Nuit des docks, Saint-Nazaire, 1991. Night-time illumination of the docks, including a submarine base, in bright colours determined by analysis of the activity during the day. The project, commissioned by the mayor, transformed the ugly military installation and site of unpleasant memories, which had been slated for demolition, into a civic asset. Kersalé cited a grandmother saying, "I would never have been able to imagine such a beautiful thing from such a horror."

«Manière noire» by Yann Kersalé

Don’t restrict yourself to the museum, the wall, to all those “dedicated” places; give yourself the opportunity to besiege forms, objects and landscapes, from dusk to dawn, as a background for a new work. Night is a “dark material” in which I scope a natural or urban landscape with all its patterns and forms with its multiple variations of human activities or its absences, as pulses going faster and calming down, until a slow pace or a stop…Its extravagances, potentials and silences. My way of tackling this “dark material” is the “manière noire” (literally: “dark style”--mezzotint) – used in printmaking process, it’s not digging to create the black, but revealing in the dark white tones, powerful grays, forms and composition. I don’t turn off the light, I make my own what already exists and I use the dark as a partner in my night vision crimes. I sculpt more as a carver. I’m a guide of these tempos and rhythms. As a “sculptator”, I don’t sculpt directly the material but through the artificial light, I look for the resonance of the material. After all, I’m only a sculptor who, like my peers, seeking in the hump and the hollow, in the shadow and the light, in the situation and in the place, in the form and in the scale, but I don’t burden myself with creating the form of light which will “turn off” the piece. The day wrapped up all the forms with a thousand of nuances like many games and possible traps for the light. The night gives free rein to the rediscovery of these new forms and this investigative field enables a creative imagination. My entire artistic quest is based on the history of a research, from a state to another—in art like in technique—going through the borders, from one to another, mixing the two of them in favor of the expression I want to give to the places I borrow. This work conceived from a unique material is not repetitive; as the artificial light, the lighting, the pulse, the light capture, technical processes are not the only achievement; each one finds out and express its own reasons or absences (my lights don’t counterfeit the sun.) The light is to let come in the dark expectedness and unexpectedness. The light capture is given back (after having been stolen… and kneaded) is like the artificial memory governing the sensations. Find the reasons of the light capture or avoid any capture, is only meant by the intelligence of the places, by my own feelings, and not by any trick or obligation. No matter if the pulse is not perceived; it’s sometimes so long (for real or because of my handlings), that we could think there’s nothing but there is a pulse. The light captures are manipulated from the gestation to the expression of the rhythms to be totally controlled. I set up the lights on the chosen object revealing presences absent under the sun; the known object appears differently offering to the viewer—even the regular one—new immediate sensations and also another memory of the personal experiences, games in between known, unknown and reminded sensations. Then, the result is an accident coming from my will and the one of the spirit of the place. This whole is my artistic intervention inviting the percepts in a different way than the sensational conventions of Art.
