United Visual Artists is an art practice founded by Matt Clark, Chris Bird and Ash Nehru in 2003. The studio has evolved into a larger practice over the years both in the number of people and types of work it produces. It encompasses large-scale temporary and permanent installations, small-scale artwork editions and live performance based projects. Our practice has often included a marriage of both physical and computational elements so we don’t really consider ourselves as artists who work strictly in the digital domain. Whilst technology is an essential tool that we use to create, our focus is on the sensations or ideas we’re trying to communicate. Some of our work is explicitly about the relationship between humans and technology. We’re often programming behaviours into our installations, it’s interesting how you can program a presence into something so rudimentary in terms of form. d3 began as a tool to create some of our earliest work, evolved with the need and aims of each of our subsequent installations, and eventually became the complex system it is today. As of a few years ago we separated the companies so that d3 can focus on product development whilst we focus on the development of our body of work. But we still work together all the time. Matt worked with 3D of Massive Attack to conceptualise a visual narrative for their 100th Window tour back in 2003 - this is also where he teamed up with Chris and Ash to form UVA. It’s one of those creative collaborations that keeps evolving not just for the stage but we’ve also worked on film and installation based projects. We’re just about to embark on a new stage design and one of the first shows will be in Hyde Park this summer. We’re fabricating our first large scale permanent artwork for a location in London. Using an algorithm it generates a never-ending stream of poetry so it will be different every time you  experience it.
